Open spaces are essential to the social, environmental, and economic fabric of any community. Open spaces include developed parks, sports complexes, preserves, multi-use trails, and public water access. Parks, sports complexes, and public water access primarily act as recreational places, encouraging play, relaxation, and gatherings. Recreation in preserves & multi-use trails is typically limited to walking, hiking, and biking. Instead, these spaces mainly aim to conserve critical landscapes and wildlife habitat.
Beyond recreation, open spaces provide important economic, environmental, and resilience benefits. Protected lands and waters support healthy fisheries, outdoor recreation, tourism, and local livelihoods. They also help absorb floodwaters, buffer communities from storms, reduce erosion, and protect surrounding properties and infrastructure. Scenic views, access to nature, and reduced exposure to flooding can also contribute to the long-term stability and attractiveness of nearby communities. Maintaining Chatham County’s open spaces is therefore essential not only to protecting its iconic landscapes and wildlife, but also to supporting residents, visitors, and the local economy
