Description
Mother Mathilda Beasley Park Text
Mother Mathilda Beasley Park is a large, serene park located on East Broad Street in Savannah’s historic district. It is both a community park for recreation and an educational historic site.
Sweeping green lawns surround a ball field with bleachers, an updated children’s playground with bouncy turf, and a handsome, decked pavilion that can be reserved for private events. Paved paths dotted with benches meander through the trees that shade the perimeter of the park. Parking is ample and free near the entrance to the park.
A popular dog park which occupies a fenced corner of the park offers plenty of room for dogs to run and play and also has a shelter with picnic tables and benches for their humans to relax and socialize. A walking path runs adjacent to the dog park and leads off into the green space and wooded areas of the park.
The jewel of the park is the tiny, lovingly restored historic cottage which belonged to Mother Mathilda Beasley, the park’s namesake and the state of Georgia’s first black nun. Mother Mathilda has been honored by the Georgia Historical Commission with an official marker at nearby Sacred Heart Church, and her cottage is now a museum filled with details about her remarkable life.
Mother Mathilda Beasley Park invites you to come for rest or recreation on its grounds and for reflection on the history brought to life in her cottage.
