Description
The Robert McCorkle Bike Trail weaves its way around beautiful Wilmington Island, connecting residential neighborhoods and commercial districts. Joggers, runners, and bikers all share the oak-lined trail. Heading southwest from Highway 80 along Johnny Mercer Boulevard, the McCorkle Trail passes several communities on wide paved sidewalks before turning onto Walthour Road.
After a short ride down Walthour Road, the trail continues along Concord Road. Here, the trail passes Chatham County Parks Abolt-O’Brien Park and Charlie Brooks Sports Complex. Both sites have restroom facilities and offer areas for rest and regrouping.
After winding through several neighborhoods, the McCorkle Trail continues down Wilmington Island Road, under majestic Spanish Oak trees. The 3.4-mile trail concludes alongside the stately Savannah Country Club. A leg trail down Cromwell Road adds .37 miles to the path.
The trail is named in honor of Robert L. McCorkle, Jr. The managing partner in McCorkle, Canady & Co., Certified Public Accountants. Mr. McCorkle was born on November 6, 1948, in Savannah.
