Description
Quiet and expansive and unspoiled, among Chatham County’s numerous and varied parks are several sprawling nature preserves, beckoning to those who want to get away from it all to spend some time in the great outdoors.
Take a short drive out to Chief of Love Road, near Georgetown, and you’ll find one of these wild beauties. Al Bungard Conservation Area is a bit off the map, but its walking paths, picnic sites, and plenty of tranquil spots to cast a fishing line make it almost a picture-postcard of Chatham County’s laidback coastal living.
Named for former Chatham County Engineer Al Bungard, this great get-away is just a short hop across the road from Chatham County’s Kings Ferry Boat Ramp and Community Park. Part of the Ogeechee River Basin, Al Bungard features one of the many freshwater ponds that Chatham County Parks and Recreation operates throughout the area. Bass and bream can be caught from bridges, banks, or unpowered boats such as kayaks or canoes.
Along with fishing, this park is popular for hiking, bicycling, and bird watching. A shaded pavilion with picnic tables provides a nice spot to get out of the sun, to have some lunch, or to gather with friends or family. To reserve the pavilion for private or community events, please call in advance : 912-652-6780, weekdays 8:00am-5:00pm.
