The recent redevelopment of L. Scott Stell Park earned statewide recognition earlier this month. CHA Consulting, Inc. received a Merit Award at the ACEC Georgia Engineering Excellence Awards, held in Atlanta on March 6, for its work on the park’s three new Airnasiums, which opened last fall.
As part of the project, the County added new basketball, tennis, and pickleball courts, all housed beneath the three Airnasiums. Each structure is outfitted with lighting and large fans, allowing the courts to support year-round recreation and expanded community use.
“This project really revitalized the park. Since the Airnasiums opened, demand has really increased. It’s always busy out there,” said Chatham County Parks and Recreation Department Director Stephen Proper.
Along with CHA, Proper also credited Assistant County Engineer Nathaniel Panther, Construction Project Superintendent Mark Slaughter, Parks & Recreation Project Manager Corey Harper, and Parks and Recreation Deputy Director Holly Holdsworth for their help in bringing the project to life.
“It was exciting to see this project recognized, and I’m proud of everyone involved who made this happen for the community,” he said.
The Airnasiums represent only a portion of the park’s redevelopment; the park also includes a lake, community gardens, four cloverleaf-style baseball/softball fields, trails, and other features that are in various stages of phased improvements, with this project serving as Phase 2 of a long-term plan.
The upgrades at L. Scott Stell Park are part of Chatham County’s ongoing investment in public recreation and community spaces, ensuring residents have access to safe, high-quality facilities for years to come.
