Get ready to watch some of the area’s best weightlifters and maybe even find your next furry friend at Wags 4 Weights, a weightlifting competition coming to the Anderson Cohen Weightlifting Center on Saturday, October 10 beginning at 8 A.M.
Hosted by Team Savannah Weightlifting and Renegade Paws Rescue, the USA Weightlifting-sanctioned event is open to men and women of all ages and ability levels. A portion of registration fees will benefit Renegade Paws Rescue, and spectators can attend the event for free.
“Team Savannah wanted to host more local events and find new ways to connect with the Savannah community. I came up with the idea of combining a weightlifting meet with a charitable cause, and Renegade Paws Rescue felt like a natural fit,” said Matt Helms, club administrator with Team Savannah Weightlifting.
While athletes will compete for a spot on the podium, adoptable dogs and dogs looking for foster homes will also be on hand, competing for a spot in attendees’ hearts—and maybe even a spot on the couch at home.
“That is a big part of what we hope makes this event meaningful beyond the competition itself. People will have the chance to meet some of the dogs in person, learn more about their personalities and needs, and talk directly with Renegade Paws volunteers about what the adoption or fostering process looks like,” Helms said.
Attendees can also bring donations to the event. The rescue’s biggest needs are towels, blankets, collars, leashes, unopened dog food, and toys.
For athletes interested in competing, early registration is open through Oct. 5, with individual entry fees set at $60. After Oct. 5, the entry fee is $75, while U17 athletes can register for $40. Entries are limited to 75 lifters.
Athletes will compete in School Age, Youth, Junior, Senior, and Master divisions. Awards will be presented to the top three athletes in each division, along with overall Best Lifters.
Helms encourages the community to come out and enjoy the event.
“We want this to be an easy, welcoming community event. Whether someone comes because they love weightlifting, wants to support Renegade Paws, is interested in adopting or fostering a dog, or is simply curious about the event, we would love to have them there.”
