Description
Frank O. Williamson Lake is off Sallie Mood Drive, across from the Aquatic Center. A one-mile scenic grass path encircles the lake, offering views of the variety of wildlife, including cormorants, ospreys, and turtles.
The lake is a popular fishing location and is named after Frank Olan Williamson. Mr. Williamson was an engineer and Director of the Public Works Department who retired in 1992.
This property has belonged to the county for almost 150 years. It was purchased in September of 1887 to serve as the location for a farm for the poor. Newspaper accounts state that individuals found begging on the streets could be sent to the farm or out of the county, whichever they preferred. More recently, this was the site of the county’s Public Works building. Today it is a beautiful location to get outdoors and enjoy Chatham County.
