Description
Originally built in 1891 by the Central of Georgia Railroad, the Tybrisa Pavilion, a large, covered dance floor open to the sea breezes, was a popular entertainment destination for decades before being destroyed by fire in 1967. Led by the efforts of the people of Tybee Island, Chatham County built the Tybrisa Pavilion II in 1996, and later dedicated it to the memory of longtime Tybee Mayor, Walter Parker.
Today, with the addition of an extended fishing pier stretching out beyond the breaking surf of the Atlantic Ocean, the Tybee Pier and Pavilion is again a music-filled, popular destination for Tybee Island visitors and residents alike. It also serves as the anchor location for special events held on the adjacent beach throughout the year, such as Easter Sunrise Services and the SCAD Sand Arts Festivals.
The octagonal pavilion is open to the public for casual use from 10:00am – 11:00pm every day without charge and is also available to be reserved for events hosting 12 or more people, such as weddings, dances, musical performances, and parties. The pavilion offers seating and tables, a concession stand, an ice cream stand, and a full-service bar. Visitors are asked to remember that the entire site is a non-smoking venue and, like all of Tybee Beach, no glass of any kind is allowed. The Pier and Pavilion are handicap accessible and, while dogs or other pets are not allowed, ADA service animals are permitted.
The pier opens to fishers, spectators, and strollers, and dawn-greeters at 6:00am every day, closing at 11:00pm. An onsite bait and tackle shop is available in case spectating leads to fishing, and there are sinks for cleaning your catch on the pier and showers for washing off the salt and sand just beside the pier. Restrooms are available in the pavilion, and plentiful parking is provided by the City of Tybee in nearby lots.
