Description
Blue Sky Nature Preserve is a 641 acre park that offers Chatham County residents the opportunity to explore a unique natural and cultural area. The Blue Sky property was purchased by Chatham County for greenspace, offering space for hiking, biking, and birdwatching. The property consists of Tidal Rivers, Freshwater Tidal Marsh, Blackwater Rivers and Swamps, Bottomland Hardwood Forests, and Forested Depressional Wetlands.
There are approximately 1.69 miles of trails at Blue Sky. Some of the trails follow old logging roads and are fairly easy to navigate, while others are more natural, uneven and more pose more of a challenge to hikers.
Species that can be found in the preserve include the flatwoods salamander, American Woodcock, Chicken Turtle, Plainbelly Water Snake, Black Swamp Snake, Hermit Thrush, Pileated Woodpecker, American Kestrel, Southern Hognose Snake, Tiger Salamander, and the Slender Glass Lizard.
In addition to recreation opportunities, the Blue Sky Preserve provides important ecosystem services to our growing county, including water sequestration and filtration of water as it makes it way to the Ogeechee River.
