Description
Tom Triplett Park
On Highway 80, just north of where it crosses I-95, Tom Triplett Community Park sprawls across roughly 200 acres of incredibly green public space, a beautiful place to take part in a whole host of active pastimes or to relish doing nothing at all. The centerpiece of the park is its 19-acre central lake, filled with catfish, bass, and bream, luring fishers to its bridges, piers, and grassy banks. Abundant wildlife in the waters, in the woods, and in the air share their habitat with visitors like nature photographers or plein air painters looking with an eye for natural beauty.
A well-lit, paved track follows the one and a half mile circumference of the lake and is dotted with shelters of various sizes providing places to rest or to escape from the summer sun or a sudden rain shower. The large, handicap accessible lakeside pavilion can be reserved for private or public happenings such as ceremonies or receptions, family reunions or cookouts, crafts fairs or workshops, youth programs, Zumba classes, or community service events. The pavilion also has a separate, enclosed meeting room ideal for club meetings, programs, or meals.
Tom Triplett Park was designed with family life and healthy living in mind, so all through the park there are places to play. One playground for children is conveniently located next to the main pavilion and pier. Across the park, a larger playground has wide open fields nearby & a high-tech springy surface for kid-friendly climbing, running & jumping. Since dogs are not allowed on the park trails, they have a playground of their own, safely fenced and divided into separate areas for larger or smaller breeds.
There are also several options for those who prefer to keep score while they play. Tennis lovers can serve up some fun on the tennis courts, disc golfers can try to beat par on the 18-hole course, and bikers can race each other along woodsy trails. Throughout the park, posted maps point the way to paths, play areas, restrooms, and amenities. Clearly marked, well-lit drives take visitors to paved parking areas adjacent to the park’s various destinations.
Those looking for history will also find it at this historically recognized stop on the Civil War Heritage Trail. Markers and information stations give a historical account of the union army’s March To The Sea as General Sherman encamped on this land in his approach to Savannah in 1864.
