Originally built as a training facility for Olympic weightlifters ahead of the 1996 Atlanta Games, the Anderson Cohen Weightlifting Center (ACWC) has grown over the past three decades into a true community space.
Part of the Chatham County Parks & Recreation system, the gym serves residents of all ages and fitness levels—from elite competitors to first-time lifters— in a welcoming and supportive environment, said Billy Cortes, Recreational Supervisor at the Anderson Cohen Weightlifting Center.
“There is no other gym in America that is or was specifically built to be a weightlifting gym. Over the years, the gym has developed into a community hub where all Chatham County residents can work out and get better together,” he said.
Located at 7232 Varnedoe Drive, ACWC offers a full gym experience with Olympic platforms, powerlifting combo racks, free weights, modern strength machines, and fully equipped locker rooms with showers and saunas.

The Center also offers a variety of classes, including weight and powerlifting classes, yoga flex and flow, and Get Excited and Move (GEM), a comprehensive exercise program designed to support individuals with Parkinson’s disease and other movement disorders.
Abilities Unlimited, a nonprofit dedicated to improving health and well-being for individuals with disabilities, also operates out of the gym. It provides a Progressive Exercise Program for those transitioning from physical therapy, as well as Special Olympics powerlifting training.
“We truly offer something for everyone,” said Cortes, a former professional soccer player and high-level athlete, adding that no matter your goal, the team at ACWC can help you achieve it. “I always wanted my career after soccer to pertain to sports. I have a passion for being around high-level sports/athletes and providing any resource I can to make them successful.”
Open to all Chatham County residents, with rates ranging from $10 for daily drop-ins to $60 a month for a family membership, ACWC is open Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Cortes encouraged anyone ready to begin their fitness journey to stop by ACWC and experience it for themselves.
“Come in, and I promise you’ll enjoy the vibe and culture,” he said.
